Aging & Loneliness

Aging comes with many challenges such as isolation, loss, caregiver stress, unresolved trauma, and even self-esteem issues. Through therapy, seniors and older adults can learn effective coping mechanisms for dealing with the daily stressors unique to the elderly population. The therapeutic relationship is used as a tool to combat social isolation, garner compassion, and establish a foundation of trust. SRI therapists recognize the dignity and value of the older adult population. - Rachel Randazzo, LCSW, SRI Therapist

Aging & Loneliness: Mental Health Support for Older Adults

As life expectancy increases, the geriatric population faces a growing epidemic: loneliness. Social isolation and loneliness are major challenges for older adults, often stemming from life changes such as:

    • Loss of loved ones
    • Retirement
    • Mobility limitations
    • Loss of housing
    • Cognitive decline
    • Loss of independence
    • Reduced social interactions
    • Fatigue
    • Chronic pain

These factors can contribute to feelings of isolation, depression, and anxiety. Research has shown that loneliness in seniors is linked to higher risks of mental health disorders, cognitive decline, and chronic illness. However, with the right support, older adults can rebuild connections, purpose, and emotional well-being.
